William E. Brookens, Jr., 89

EAST LIVERPOOL – William E. Brookens, Jr., 89, of Cadmus Street, died early Thursday morning, April 11, 2013 at East Liverpool City Hospital following a lengthy illness.

Born in Wellsburg, W.Va. on Sept. 17, 1923, Mr. Brookens was a son of late William E. Brookens Sr. and Eva Payne Brookens.

Mr. Brookens was a veteran of WWII serving with the U.S. Army and retired as a superintendent from Conrail where he was employed for more than 50 years.

He was a member of Sheridan AME Church and had served as a trustee. He was also a member of the Black History Museum, Point of Light and the National Association of Retired and Veterans Railway Employees Inc.

Preceding him in death on Feb. 27, 1995 was his wife, Elizabeth “Bobby” Brookens who he married Oct. 20, 1947. He was also preceded by two sisters, Betty Royal and Kathryn Carpenter.

Survivors include many nieces and nephews.

Services are planned for 11 a.m. Monday at the Dawson Funeral Home with Rev. Brenda L. Johnson of Sheridan AME Church officiating. Full military honors will be provided by the Tri-State Veterans Burial Group. Friends may visit Sunday at the funeral home where the family will be present from 2-6 p.m.

Burial will take place in Spring Grove Cemetery.

Family and friends will gather at the Dawson Family Center following the services.
