County man holds intruder at gunpoint

LISBON –When a stranger walked into an East Washington Street home on Saturday afternoon, the occupant took matters into his own hands by holding the intruder at gunpoint until police arrived.

Dale and Roxanne Hood were home when a man walked into their unlocked house at 1:51 p.m. and was confronted by Mrs. Hood, who asked what he was doing there and then ordered him to leave.

Mr. Hood was in another room when he heard the commotion, grabbed his revolver and rushed to the front of the house just as the man was running out the front door.

“Mr. Hood gave chase and then the guy gave up and went to the ground,” said police Chief Mike Abraham.

Meanwhile, Mrs. Hood called police, and officer Fred Carlisle arrived to find the suspect lying face down in a nearby front yard, with Mr. Hood, 68, standing over him and his revolver trained on him.

Carlisle motioned for Mr. Hood to lower his weapon, which he did.

Carlisle then handcuffed the suspect, who was identified as William L. Howard, 36, of Akron, who was mostly incoherent. Howard did say he grew up in Lisbon and was back in town when he acquired some bad drugs. He also talked about being chased through town, which is how he ended up at the Hood residence.

Howard was arrested on burglary charges and taken to the county jail. He was unarmed and did not threaten anyone.
