Burns lead to meth probe in Weirton

WEIRTON — Weirton officials are investigating a potential methamphetamine-related incident in the city.

Emergency personnel responded at about 4:30 p.m. Wednesday to a call reporting a possible explosion at a residence on Columbus Way.

“Dispatch relayed it as an explosion. There was no explosion,” City Manager Travis Blosser explained while on the scene Wednesday evening.

Upon arrival, police officers and firefighters found two adults with burns, although no information was available as to how or where the burns had been received. Officials on scene said the two adults did not live at the Columbus Way residence, and it was uncertain as to why they were there.

Blosser said police suspected methamphetamine was connected to the incident, and it was possible the individuals had been burned outside of Weirton sometime prior to being at the Columbus Way residence.

Emergency personnel conducted decontamination protocols on the individuals involved, as a precaution, before transporting them to a local hospital for further treatment.

Blosser said there was no danger to any of the surrounding neighborhood as a result of the incident.

“It’s a precautionary measure,” Blosser said. “Everything is safe and secure.”

In addition to Weirton police and fire, officers from the West Virginia State Police were on scene, as were units from local emergency medical detachments.

No further information was immediately available. Officials said they will continue investigating.
