Traffic stop leads to theft charges
CALCUTTA — St. Clair Township K-9 Officer Chris Davis initiated a traffic stop Friday at 8:34 a.m. on state Route 11 after witnessing a vehicle making a turn from state Route 170 without using a signal.
He deployed K-9 Axel, who reportedly alerted to narcotics on the passenger side front door, and passenger Eric R. Gallop, 34, no address listed, was asked to step from the vehicle.
When asked if he had anything on him harmful to officers, Gallop said he had needles in his sock, and Detective Greg Smith found two syringes, with the packaging for them found in his coat pocket.
Gallop told officers he had purchased the syringes at Tractor Supply, but employees there said no one had made such a purchase within the previous 20 minutes, after which Gallop reportedly admitted stealing the syringes — valued at $3.47 — from the store.
He was charged with petty theft and the syringes were destroyed.
