City’s campaign aids in solving crimes

EAST LIVERPOOL — The city’s new See Something, Say Something campaign – which encourages citizens to report unusual activity they witness – is being credited with helping police recover a stolen mini-bike and arrest a person in connection with its theft.

Chief John Lane said Michael A. Scarabino, address not given, had reported the mini-bike stolen Tuesday and had posted pictures of it on his social media page.

A resident having seen it posted then reported seeing the motorbike at a residence on Grant Street, and police officers went to the home, where an officer reported seeing it on the back porch.

Detective Greg Smith went to the front door and spoke to the residents, who said they did not have such a bike, with their son saying the same. They said they didn’t know whose bike was on the back porch.

When officers and the residents walked to the back of the house, the bike had been covered up with a blanket, but the residents continued denying any knowledge about the bike.

Smith told them they could be held liable for having the stolen item on their property and that someone obviously was aware of it, having covered it up.

A friend of the family, Eriq McFadden, 18, then told officers he had possession of the bike and had covered it up, saying he purchased it Tuesday from an unknown male somewhere off St. Clair Avenue, although he said he would be unable to point out the location.

McFadden was charged with receiving stolen property, and the bike was seized, with the owner notified of its recovery.

Lane said this was a case of someone seeing something out of the ordinary and letting police know.
