EAST LIVERPOOL — A late night fire Saturday destroyed the contents of a Prospect Street garage, also killing the owner’s two dogs inside.

A neighbor of Luke Morris, 400 Prospect St., called at 11:02 p.m. to say his house was on fire and that it was believed people were trapped inside.

The police department called and reported the same, and firefighters on duty immediately put out a third alarm for additional firefighters.

While en route from Central Station, they were advised that it was Morris’ detached garage, and not his house, ablaze and all occupants were out of the house.

Upon arrival, firefighters found more than half the garage involved and a boat in the driveway also on fire. While firefighter Josh Hissom protected the house from catching fire by pouring water onto it, firefighter Antony Cumo began an attack on the garage doors, extinguishing the bulk of that blaze.

The home owner advised that a cat and two dogs were missing and that the dogs were in the garage. Firefighters were unable to reach them due to the extent of the fire and they were found deceased in their kennel.

The dogs’ bodies were wrapped in blankets by firefighters and placed in the yard. The cat was located unharmed.

The contents of the garage were a complete loss, and the structure itself remained standing but was heavily damaged, according to reports. About half of the boat was burned, and the house sustained some melted siding.

The cause of the blaze remains under investigation, and fire officials were uncertain Monday if the structure is insured.
