Questionable purchase at Rogers Sale
LISBON – A man browsing at the Rogers Sale Friday morning reported to sheriff’s deputies that he came across a vendor selling two bronze grave markers from World War II.
Dave Moore, no address listed, bought them for $17 for the pair and called deputies.
The vendor, Albert C. Rodibaugh Jr. of Bethel Park, Pa., claimed he bought them from a man at a yard sale recently. The man told Rodibaugh he worked at a cemetery where they were replacing the old bronze markers and his boss gave him a couple.
The markers are imprinted with “Presented by the County Commissioners Washington County Penna.”
Deputies told Rodibaugh they are usually recycled, not given away. The $17 was returned to Moore.
Deputies then contacted Barry Grimm of the Washington County Veterans Affairs Administration, who told them to destroy the markers and discard them due to the cost of returning them outweighing the benefits.
