Former fiscal officer pleads guilty to theft

LISBON – Jennifer L. Burton, the woman accused of theft in office while she was serving as in the village of Summitville’s fiscal officer, reportedly pleaded guilty to the charge in Columbiana County Common Pleas Court Friday morning.

Burton, 34, Emerick Road, Kensington, had been scheduled for a jury trial to begin on Monday, but chose instead to offer a plea on Friday.

A recently completed state audit of Summitville’s books for 2009 through 2011 included a finding for recovery in the amount of $1,590 against Burton, who served as fiscal officer during that period before she stepped down in late 2012.

When the indictment against Burton was issued back in December, Assistant County Prosecutor John Gamble had said the charge involves cash, which was paid by people for traffic citation fines and court costs. Those funds were collected by Burton while she was also serving as the clerk for the village’s mayor’s court. Gamble said the matter has to do with the record keeping for the cash collected.

Burton is scheduled to be sentenced on Aug. 8.
