Wellsville academic quiz teams head for nationals

Mitchell McIntosh

WELLSVILLE — Five Wellsville High School students will travel to Chicago to represent their school in both the team and individual competitions of the Small School National Academic Quiz Tournament.

Valentina Gheorghe, Wellsville teacher and coach of the Academic Challenge team, informed the school board Monday that seniors Mitchell McIntosh, Jonathan DeJane, Aiden Hooper and Tyler Knight, and junior Maggie Willison have qualified and plan to compete in the team nationals May 3-5 in Rosemont, Ill., at the Hyatt Regency O’Hare.

She said McIntosh’s high scores in state quiz competition qualified him to compete in the Individual Player National Championship Tournament, set for April 7 in the same location. He is reportedly one of only 128 competitors in the tournament, and only one of three from Ohio, and the first-ever from Wellsville to advance to the individual event.

The board approved participation in the tournaments as school field trips.

Mitchell’s mother, Heidi McIntosh, who would be her son’s chaperone at the tourney, was present at Monday’s board meeting. Gheorghe and Charles Kish would chaperone the team.

Gheorghe said this is the second consecutive year for Wellsville to send a team to the national quiz tournament.
