Gun found in student’s backpack

STEUBENVILLE — A 17-year-old male who was being taken into custody at Steubenville High School on Tuesday morning in connection with an armed robbery had a loaded .40 caliber handgun in his backpack, City Police reported.

Police were notified around 9:23 p.m. Saturday by two people in a vehicle, who claimed they were robbed at gunpoint by two people on foot.

City detectives were able to identify one of the suspects as a student at the high school. A detective went to the high school at 7:52 a.m. on Tuesday to talk to the male juvenile. The juvenile was brought to the school office, where he was taken into custody, police reported.

The juvenile’s backpack was searched and the handgun, which was reported stolen out of Wellsburg, was found.

Police reported a 16-year-old male also was taken into custody on Tuesday in connection with the armed robbery.

Both teens were taken to the juvenile detention center.

Jefferson County Assistant Prosecutor Samuel Pate said both teens faces two counts of aggravated robbery, with a firearm specification.

The teen who was caught with the handgun in his backpack faces additional charges.

Pate said he is considering filing motions to have both teens bound over to adult court.
