CCCTC student meets board and state governor

LISBON — Precision Machining Manufacturing student Katie Chludzinski recently met Governor Mike DeWine and this week she met members of the Columbiana County Career and Technical Center board.

Selected as one of five student Presidential Scholar Semi-Finalists through the career technical component in Ohio, Chludzinski was recognized during the Ohio ACTE Legislative Seminar in Columbus in January. She also has the opportunity to apply to the US Department of Education to be one of 20 CTE students selected for national honors. During Tuesday’s meeting, Assistant Superintendent Jeremy Corbisello introduced Chludzinski and her parents to the board. An outstanding senior at the CCCTC, she also is on track to be valedictorian of her class this spring at Lisbon David Anderson High School. Besides her academic achievements, which include a score of 33 on the ACT, Corbisello listed a long number of organizations and leadership roles Chludzinski place both at the DAHS and the CCCTC.

She also had a machining summer internship at Butech Bliss and plans to study mechanical engineering in college. Chludzinski talked to the board about her experience in Columbus and how the students there spoke to the governor about Career Tech education.

“I’m very grateful that I got to go to the Career Center,” she said. “I”ve learned so much in the past two years,” she added, not just about precision machining manufacturing, but also about life.

Corbisello noted many of the other students in attendance at that event came from bigger career centers in bigger cities.

In other matters before the board:

— Tuesday’s meeting came prior to another day of school canceled on Wednesday. Superintendent Chuck Adkins noted the CCCTC is nearly at the end of the number of times it can have delays or cancelations this winter. Adkins said he appreciates how open and good the superintendents of the partner schools are when it comes to letting them know about their delay and closures so the CCCTC can accommodate the students.

Adkins reported because the CCCTC has shorter school days than the other schools, there may be the need for make up days at the end of the school year.

— Treasurer Katherine Mihalich explained to the board she was setting up an online auction account through E-bay and PayPal in order to place two pieces of equipment no longer being used from the old machining lab.

The CCCTC recently created the new precision machining lab with newer equipment. Mihalich said she has learned through the program’s instructor, Matt Peters, the school could receive higher bids by opening it up on E-bay instead of simply having a local bidding process.

— The board granted permission for a reduction in force for the position of the Adult Education COST Coordinator, reducing the number of days worked from 260 days to 204 days, effective July 1, 2019. Adkins explained there is not that much work during the summer months for that position.

— The board approved the hiring of seasonal employees for the summer — Hildy Deemer, building and grounds, and Alex Hilbert, technology.

— The board accepted donations of a four-cylinder diesel engine from Ohio Cat in Youngstown to the Automotive Technology Program and a hospital bassinet for the Adult Education nursing program from East Liverpool City Hospital for use with the new Noelle mannequin.

— The next meeting of the board will be 7 p.m., March 19.
