Post office relocation still in the works

EAST LIVERPOOL — A new location is yet to be found for the city’s new post office.

David Wolff, real estate specialist for the United States Postal Service, gave an update on the relocation project during a public forum Monday evening in city hall.

He encouraged the public that a post office will remain in the city.

“You won’t be without a post office, it is just a matter of how long it is going to take,” he said.

The postal service is considering the relocation from the existing building at 700 Dresden Ave. in what Wolff said is an attempt to “economize and downsize.”

The postal service made the announcement in late October of its plans to relocate the retail office. Since then, Wolff has been scouting potential new locations, but hasn’t had success.

“I couldn’t find a piece of property that would suit our needs that isn’t already being used,” he explained.

He added that the post office doesn’t like to own property and would rather lease.

He went on to say the existing post office is not only retail, but a carrier annex, with about 20 carriers.

“Carriers are the bread and butter of the postal service. Without them we don’t exist,” he said.

Once a site is selected by the postal service, a public meeting will be held to discuss that as well. The new location will need to be in the same general area, meaning that the post office would remain in the city, Wolff said.

“There are times where something does happen to a property and you have to close down for a while and go to a nearby post office,” he said.

As for a timeframe, Wolff said he would like to see the project finalized within nine to 12 months.

“That is completely optimistic. I can never promise when something is going to occur, but I can promise you … I don’t terminate a project. I will put them aside for the moment,” he said.

He also said the relocation project would not use any tax dollars, Wolff said.

“We are kind of a semi-autonomous agency run through the executive branch of government,” he said.

Residents are able to submit questions, concerns, or comments about the project to David Wolff, Real Estate Specialist, USPS Headquarters, P.O. Box 27498-1103, Greensboro, N.C., 27509 no later than Dec. 29.
