EAST LIVERPOOL — Despite the chilly temperatures Saturday morning, more than 170 people turned out in support of Heartbeat of Columbiana County and its annual “Walk for Life.”

The event, held at Thompson Park, raised $25,831 for Heartbeat, which provides free services to women and families.

Several local churches sponsored teams of walkers. The most pledges raised came from members of Heights UBC.

Pastor and state Rep. Tim Ginter was on hand to open the event with prayer. Participants first received a complimentary continental breakfast, and following the one-hour walk through the park, they were treated to a hot barbecue lunch.

Food and beverages for the annual fundraiser were provided by Adrian’s, Hoge’s, McDonald’s, Sheetz, Sweet Deli, Clearly the Best, Brickers, L&B Donuts, Rayl’s Market, Tim Horton’s, Giant Eagle of Calcutta and East Liverpool, Peace Valley Orchards, Beresford’s Meats, MJB BBQ, Frank’s Pastry, B&S Carryout, Walmart and Chaney’s.

Billy Collins and Sheryl Garner provided musical entertainment throughout the day, and there was a craft and coloring table for children.

Heartbeat’s Executive Director Linda Dankert and board treasurer Devin Giambroni presented awards to the individual walker with the most pledges, the oldest walker, the youngest walker, and the winners of the children’s coloring contest.

The Walk for Life is one of two annual fundraisers the East Liverpool-based organization conducts to raise money for its annual budget. Funds received go directly to support unborn babies and their mothers.

According to a release, Heartbeat operates the Ava Women’s Center, which provides ultrasounds, options counseling, and support services to expectant mothers so they can make a choice for life, and the Cornerstone Parenting Center, which helps new parents by providing educational resources, materials, and mentoring.

“Heartbeat affirms the God-given value of life by encouraging and empowering pregnant women to choose life by providing education, medical care, peer counseling, and material resources in a loving and professional environment,” a release reads.
