EL among schools to benefit from reading grant

LISBON — Some local schools will be sharing in the benefits of $1.2 million grant through the Ohio Department of Education, which will be used to improve reading skills.

Marie Williams, director of teaching and learning at the Columbiana County Education Service Center, said the grant was written as a group effort for the Striving Readers Grant, but it was later turned down. Now she has been notified by the ODE that another funding source became available and they will receive $1.2 million through a three-year grant.

Williams said the districts involved have been notified and much of the money will be used for professional development, helping teachers learn new skills to assist students with reading concepts. The skills the teachers will learn can reportedly translate to be utilized with any reading program the schools are already using.

ESC Superintendent Anna Marie Vaughn said there is still paperwork which needs to be submitted to the ODE by Sept. 30 to finalize the acceptance of the money, but the schools involved are very excited about getting started.

The schools in the program include East Liverpool, Salem and Lisbon. The reading assistance will include some of the area preschools operated by the county ESC as well.
