Trustees ponder replacement policy levy

CALCUTTA — St. Clair Township officials are looking to replace an old levy dating back 30-plus years for its police department.

During last week’s meeting, trustees approved a resolution to see tax evaluation from the county auditor’s office as the township looks to put a replacement 2-mill police levy on the ballot for the Nov. 6 general election.

The levy, if approved, will go toward the maintenance of cruisers, communications and other equipment used by St. Clair Township police. It also would handle police salaries. Funds would be collected by the township starting with calendar year 2019.

Noting there are two levies, dating back to 1983 and 1985, Fiscal Officer Deborah Dawson explained the township was looking to cancel out the 1985 levy, which was a 4 mill levy, and replace it with a 2-mill levy.

Information from the auditor’s office will include the revenue of the new levy along with how much residents would need to pay in taxes with the new levy.

Also in police department matters, Police Chief Brian McKenzie provided the department’s May activity report, which totaled 278 reports logged by police that month — a considerable increase from April’s count (191 reports) and making May the month with the highest volume so far in 2018.

The May breakdown consisted of 108 total incident reports, 77 arrests, 49 traffic citations, 44 crash reports, 21 incidents/documentation, 15 thefts, and 12 towed vehicles. The report also listed nine cases of drug activity, seven warrant check/services, six traffic stops, five juvenile problems, four domestic violence reports, four DUIs, four harrassment calls, three assaults, three investigating disturbances, two ambulance calls, two Code 10s, two vandalism calls, one breaking and entering, one disabled vehicle, one fraud, one identity theft, one investigation, one mental subject, one neighborhood dispute, and one request for public assistance.

In other business, road supervisor Scott Barrett reported the township is finishing its preparations for the chip-and-seal program with Columbia Gas scheduled for the beginning of July. Barrett said crews also will be assisting neighboring Liverpool Township’s road department with its chip-and-seal prepartions.

The next trustees’ meeting is scehduled noon June 26 at the Township Administration Building on Pugh Road, Calcutta.
