EMT charged with theft

LISBON — A theft charge has been filed against John K. McGuire, an emergency medical technician accused of stealing money from the pocket of a dead accident victim on June 18.

Sheriff Ray Stone confirmed on Monday his office took a few days to examine the evidence and decided to charge McGuire, 56, Fairview Place, Beloit, with a theft charge in Columbiana County Municipal Court. The charge is a first-degree misdemeanor.

McGuire had been responding to a call of a private property accident on Saltwell Road near Lisbon. Melvin Bricker, 72, who was test driving his truck after replacing an engine, had crashed into some trees in the back of his property, reportedly when the accelerator stuck.

The charges filed on Monday allege that while preparing to take Bricker to the funeral home, McGuire removed a money clip from him and placed it into his own pocket. A sheriff’s report from that evening stated a firefighter told deputies he saw McGuire remove the money clip.

McGuire was interviewed at the scene by the sheriff’s office and Deputy Brandon Brown got his consent to search him. The money clip and $42 were located in McGuire’s back pocket.

A warrant was issued for McGuire and Stone said the deputies would be serving McGuire with the charge soon.
