NEW CUMBERLAND — In conjunction with the state of West Virginia’s annual “Make It Shine Day,” the Keep New Cumberland Beautiful committee held its 14th cleanup day on April 21 at Crestview Park.

A group of 18 volunteers took part on Earth Day to spruce up the park for the summer season. Trees near the large deck were trimmed to give a better view along the river. Branches and brush were cleared and fallen trees were removed along the walking trails. The large deck, a popular spot for viewing the dam, was spruced up by replacing some of the worn boards and restaining the railing around the edge of the deck.

In addition, six bags of litter were removed from the park.

Seven of this year’s volunteers were members of the Metz family, who took part in honor of the late Ralph Metz. This year’s clean-up was dedicated to Mr. Metz, who was a frequent volunteer at the annual “Make It Shine” events.

On the following day, a dogwood tree was planted near the gazebo in New Cumberland as a further way to honor Earth Day.

“The committee would like to thank all those who turned out to help with this year’s cleanup,” a release read. “Your efforts will be appreciated by all who visit Crestview Park this summer.”
