City seeks help to maintain playgrounds

EAST LIVERPOOL — Members of city council’s recreation committee are asking for the public’s help to maintain several playgrounds throughout the city, with community meetings set for 6-6:30 p.m. Tuesday to solicit that assistance.

Chairman Ernest Peachey will meet with residents during that time at the Broadway Wharf to discuss needed assistance at the wharf and the St. George Street playground; committee member Scott Barrett will meet during the same time at Fulmer Park on Moore Street to ask for assistance with that facility and the Bank Street Playground; while committee member Jeff Kreefer will spend time with interested volunteers during that time at the Klondyke Playground to solicit help for that facility and the Orchard Grove playground.

“The children of the East Liverpool community need a safe, clean and fun place to play, and adults need an enjoyable place to gather. We need your help,” Peachey said, urging residents to join their city councilmen at one of the aforementioned facilities to discuss how they might be able to help.

Meanwhile, Peachey told city council this week that his committee has been busy applying for, or preparing to apply for, various grants to be used for equipment and improvements at the playgrounds.

He said the committee has been awarded a $1,000 environmental grant from Heritage Thermal Services, which will be awarded with other grants this weekend on Earth Day.

Also submitted has been an application for a $12,000 CDBG grant through the county to purchase handicapped-accessible swings; and an $18,000 grant through the office of state Rep Tim Ginter for facility improvements.

Peachey said he is also compiling video to submit for another $20,000 grant.
