Council establishes part time tax position
EAST LIVERPOOL – A new temporary clerk will be at work in the city tax department.
City Council passed legislation at its Feb. 5 meeting, establishing the position of part-time tax clerk, agreeing that tax Commissioner Linda Harpold could hire someone temporarily to get through her busy season with the understanding the Civil Service Commission would have to schedule a test from which the permanent part-time position would be filled.
However, Harpold was quickly advised by the Civil Service Commission that even a temporary clerk would have to take a test before being hired, and she had said there was not enough time to schedule such a test for the current tax season.
City Treasurer Deb Fickes reported she had hired April Conaway as a part-time clerk through her office, which is not governed by Civil Service, with Conaway to work in the tax department.
Conaway will work less than 30 hours per week for two to three months, filing and answering the phone, according to Harpold, who said she has asked the Civil Service Commission to schedule the test for the permanent part-time clerk’s position.
Harpold announced that the tax department will have extended hours beginning today, when it will be open until 5:30 p.m. on Tuesdays and Thursdays.
She reminded taxpayers to bring with them their W-2 and 1040 forms.
