Board OK’s new roof, heating system for Garfield Elementary

WELLSVILLE — The Wellsville Board of Education has decided on a new roofing and heating system for Garfield Elementary, and now plans shift to who will do the work.

During a special meeting last week, the board approved two options with architecting firm Buehrer Group Architecture and Engineering regarding the new roof and the new HVAC heating/air conditioning system at Garfield Elementary.

The first option the board approved consisted of a complete removal of the existing built-up roof at the school with a 90 mil EPDM single ply and fully-adhered 4-inch ISO insulation along with new roof drains, metal coping and Dryvit entrance soffits. A 30-year warranty is included in this option.

The other option approved was regarding the heating system, as a new HVAC system was OK’d. This will include unit ventilators for hot and cold water, and required all unit ventilator openings to stay at current size, and will include all equipment and installation of the system.

The next step now is to see who will handle construction, as the board also approved a resolution for the treasurer to advertise bids to handle work on both jobs.

Bid packets will be available starting March 16. A pre-bid meeting will be held March 26 — packets can be collected by the school starting that day. All packets must be submitted by noon April 3. Bids will be opened by the treasurer at 12:15 p.m. that day.

School officials have been looking into the replacement of the roof and the heating/cooling system for more than a year now, to which they have stated the Lincoln Street school’s roof had surpassed its expected lifespan and has been in need of replacement.

The district has been working with the Buehrer Group since last summer discussing possible plans for both projects.

The board will hold its next regular meeting at 6:30 p.m. March 19 at Daw Elementary.
