Commissioners approve reverse 911

LISBON — Columbiana County commissioners have signed off on a plan to bring reverse 911 to residents.

Acting on the recommendation of the county 911 advisory committee, commissioners on Wednesday approved entering into an agreement with Inspiron Logistics to incorporate the Wireless Emergency Notification System (WENS) into the county’s 911 system. Commonly known as reverse 911, the system enables the county to send out emergency alerts to those who register for the service.

All landlines that are publicly listed would automatically be enrolled in the alert system, but those with smart phones would have to voluntarily enroll in the program to receive an alert. Those with flip phones with texting capability can also sign up to receive alerts.

Once WENS is installed and tested, the county will undertake a publicity campaign to make residents aware when and how they can begin enrolling in the program.

The contract with Inspiron is for three years, with the company to be paid $5,600 the first year and $9,600 each in the second and third years.

In other news, commissioners raised no objection to a liquor license transfer request from the former Mason’s Steak House, state Route 14, Salem Township, to Lawless Entertainment, doing business at the same location as Lawless Feed & Sing. Commissioners took this position because there was no objection from the township trustees.

Commissioners also adopted a proclamation declaring March Developmental Disabilities Awareness Month to help spread the message that “people with developmental disabilities may live successful lives in our community and realize their potential.”
