School board positions shift for the new year

CALCUTTA — A few changes were made to some assignments along with its president and vice-president positions as the Beaver Local Board of Education held its reorganizational meeting Monday.

Held prior to its regular meeting, the board approved the nominations of Bill Croxall to return as president and Jerry Barnett as vice-president for the 2018 calendar year. Croxall, who most recently served as president in 2015 and was vice president last year, succeeds last year’s president Greg Eisenhart.

Croxall was nominated for president by Eisenhart and Barnett, while Barnett was nominated by Eisenhart and Croxall.

Immediately after being approved as president, Croxall took over the remainder of the night’s business for Eisenhart.

Another change was made from 2017 was in regard to appointments for the Ohio School Boards Association, in which the board approved Barnett to remain as the OSBA liaison person–acting as a link between the OSBA and the Beaver Local board– for 2018, while Eisenhart will serve as the OSBA student achievement liaison.

Eisenhart will take over the latter position from Lance Shultz who, although served in that role last year, withdrew the nomination due to scheduling conflicts. Shultz then offered the spot to board member Patrick Clutter, who also declined for the same reason.

Meanwhile, the board approved the assignments of nine committees, six of which remain the same as 2017, two with alternating members, and one with an additional member from the year before.

Remaining the same as last year were the Transportation Committee (handled by Clutter and Barnett), the Curriculum Committee (handled by Shultz and Eisenhart), Athletic Committee/Booster Clubs and Buildings and Grounds (both handled by Croxall and Eisenhart), Labor Management/Negotiations (handled by Croxall and Clutter), and Community Advisory (handled by Croxall and Barnett).

A switch in members was made in the Cafeteria and Finance committees, to which the Cafeteria committee will now consist of Eisenhart and Barnett, while Shultz and Clutter will cover finance. The switch was made at the request of Clutter, who did not wish to remain on the Cafeteria committee. Eisenhart, who served on finance last year, agreed to step down from that committee.

In addition, the Policy Committee will include a second member this year as Croxall will join Eisenhart, who served in the committee alone last year.

Aside from the assignments, the board approved the keep the meeting times and dates the same as the previous year. Meetings are held at 7 p.m. on the second Monday of each month, with a work session for the board prior to the regular meeting.

Also in regard to the OSBA, the board agreed to the annual dues for the state board, which comes to a total of $4,842. The breakdown include $4,692 for membership dues, and $150 for an electronic copy related to school management. There is no charge for a briefcase subscription.

In addition, the board set the district’s service fund at $7,500, which will be used to cover expenses of school board members and representatives to attend seminars, workshops and other business actively for school board purposes. The fund’s amount can range from $2 per student to a maximum amount of $20,000.

The $7,500 appropriation has been the same as the past couple years, to which Treasurer Stacy Williams explained that the school board usually goes to the annual OSBA Capital Conference in Columbus.
