Pennsylvania man sentenced to 4 years

LISBON –A Pennsylvania man was sentenced to four years in prison for molesting a Liverpool Township girl over an eight-year period.

The sentence against Roger Ciriello, 63, of Beaver Falls, was handed down Friday by Columbiana County Common Pleas Court Judge Scott Washam after Ciriello previously pleaded guilty to three counts of gross sexual imposition. He received mandatory credit for 303 days spent in the county jail awaiting the outcome of the case.

Ciriello was also designated a Tier II sex offender, requiring he register with the sheriff’s office in the county wherever he lives following his release.

Assistant County Prosecutor Tim McNicol said the crimes occurred at the Liverpool Township home he shared with his girlfriend. The victim was his girlfriend’s daughter, who was 8 years old when the activity began. According to court records, Ciriello molested the girl between 2004 and April 2012.

Ciriello was indicted in January 2013 but McNicol said he was not located until four years later.

When it came time for Ciriello to address the court, he told Judge Washam he was prepared to take his chances at trial but defense attorney Richard Hura “strongly” recommended he take the plea deal offered by the prosecutor’s office. Hura said his client, by pleading guilty, was taking responsibility for his actions.

Ciriello also presented Washam with a written statement to review instead of reading it himself. Washam took several minutes to read it, which he did in silence, but indicated there was nothing in it that would convince him not to follow McNicol’s recommendation that Ciriello be sentenced to four years in prison.

“You did accept responsibility and entered a plea to the indictment,” Washam told him.
