Trustees to host open house

WEST POINT — Residents of Madison Township will have an opportunity this Saturday to view the latest equipment and housing for its road department, meetings and offices.

The Madison Township Board of Trustees will present its Open House from 11 a.m. until 2 p.m. this Saturday as the township showcases the new Madison Township Garage, located on state Route 45.

Free and open to the public, guests will have an opportunity to tour facility and see its newest offices, meeting room, space for equipment, and work area for the road department.

The open house also will serve as the public’s first opportunity to view the township’s new snow and ice removal truck, which arrived at the township garage last month and will be used by the township road crew as it works to clear roads this winter.

The truck, a 2018 International, was purchased through Hill International of Calcutta this past February for $125,558, following a nearly $13,000 down payment. The new truck is equipped with a new stainless steel bed, spreader, chains, snow plow and has an eight-year bumper-to-bumper warranty, improving the township’s fleet of trucks which have been through several repairs to the point that a new truck was needed.

Groundbreaking on the facility took place in late 2014, and construction was handled by Hays Construction, with Sanford Plumbing and other contractors, painters and individuals assisting in the work. The garage now serves as the site for the township’s board of trustees meetings, held at 6 p.m. on the second and fourth Wednesdays of each month unless otherwise noted.

In past meetings, trustees have recognized one individual who was able to make the new garage a reality: the late Glen Smith.

Smith, who served as a township trustee from 2014 until his death in May 2016, was responsible for spearheading the development of the garage from construction, which was completed in 2016.

Food and refreshments courtesy of Tim Hortons of Calcutta will be available at the open house.
