SWD recycling event Saturday at Fairgrounds

LISBON — Local residents with old electronics and appliances containing freon are reminded they can dispose of those items Saturday morning at the Columbiana County Fairgrounds.

Tom Butch of the three-county solid waste disposal district attended Wednesday’s meeting of county commissioners to remind the public about the drop-off event, which will be held from 9 a.m. to noon.

Following are electronic devices that can be disposed of for free: calculators, cameras, cellphones, computers, copy machines, keyboards and mice, laptops, microwaves, Notebooks, scanners, typewriters, vacuums, CRT/LCD monitors, CD/DVD/VCR players, printers, fax machines, stereos and radio equipment.

TVs are also accepted, but there is a $5 cash-only disposal fee for the old tube-style and projection-style TVs.

There is no charge for appliances with freon, such as refrigerators, freezers, dehumidifiers and air conditioners.

All of the materials will be recycled as much as possible.

The solid waste district serves Columbiana, Carroll and Harrison counties. A drop-off event for household hazardous waste and tires was held at the fairgrounds in May.

In other action at the meeting, commissioners accepted an annexation petition from the R. Mark Shivers Trust, which is seeking to annex 1.2 acres into Salem from Perry Township. The property is on Benton Road and surrounded by Salem on three of four sides.

Since the trust is the only property involved, the petition is considered an expedited petition, which means commissioners have no choice but to approve the annexation request as long as it meets legal requirements.
