Elementary PTAs recognized

NEW CUMBERLAND — Parent teacher associations (PTA) representing two Hancock County elementary schools received recognition during Monday’s Board of Education meeting.

The board recognized the PTAs of Allison Elementary and New Manchester Elementary for participation this past school year, and honors were presented during the meeting’s “Take A Bow” portion. Representatives from both PTAs were on hand to accept certificates from Superintendent Kathy Kidder Wilkerson.

Allison Elementary was presented with the Early Bird Award, which recognizes the addition of 25 or more members from Sept. 25 through Oct. 1, and the Membership Magic Award, recognizing PTAs that reached 75 percent membership by Nov. 15.

New Manchester Elementary also received both honors along with the Back to School Award, which recognizes PTAs with 25 or more members added before Sept. 15.

The board also recognized Oak Glen High senior Jayson Chappell, who received the West Virginia PTA Scholarship — one of five seniors who applied for the honor.

According to a biography presented to Wilkerson, Jayson participates in Key Club, National Honors Society, Heroes Ambassador, and 4-H. He also volunteers his time as a mentor for youth group, PTA video production and greeting cards for nursing homes and the military. After graduation, he plans to attend either the Community College of Beaver County Aviation Science or Robert Morris University to major in drone and professional pilot, with a minor in video journalism.

Jayson is the son of Earl and Michelle Chappell, the latter of whom serves as a board member, and currently resides in New Cumberland.

Wilkerson presented the awards in place of Judy Snyder, current state parliamentarian and former state and county PTA president, whom Wilkerson said had planned to attend but was unable to do so due to illness.

In other business:

— In personnel matters, the board approved the transfer of Weir Middle teacher Bria Cross, who currently serves as a sixth grade teacher. She will remain at the school next year, but will instead serve as a math teacher. The board also accepted the resignation of Weir boys basketball assistant coach Anthony Piccirillo, effective April 12, for personal reasons.

— The board approved a memorandum of understanding between the county schools and the West Virginia University Extension Office for the 2017-18 school year.

— The board approved a bid from Mansuetto and Sons to repair the lower rear section of the roof at Oak Glen Middle School for a total cost of $284,950. The bid from Mansuetto and Sons was the lowest of three bids presented to the district, to which the other two bids came from G and W Roofing ($395,000) and Kalkreuth ($380,300).

— The board also approved a request from ArcelorMittal USA’s Weirton plant to use one bus and one driver for the plant’s Health and Safety Program from 10 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. April 28.

The next regular board meeting is scheduled for 5 p.m. May 8.
