NEW BALL FIELDS
BL preparing fields for spring season
CALCUTTA — With spring sports right around the corner, Beaver Local will be looking to utilize its new baseball and softball field this season.
During Monday’s meeting, board president Greg Eisenhart provided an update on the status of the baseball and softball fields, as well as the track, saying ground crews are working on the dugouts and expected the roofs to be completed within the next week or two.
Board member Bill Croxall also provided comment on the grounds, stating he recently walked the track and tennis courts and noted the work on the baseball and softball fields.
“I think when the baseball and softball (fields) are done, you’ll really like it. It’ll be nice this year, but it’ll be even nicer next year when the grass receives an extra year of growth,” he said.
The fields are located on the former site of Beaver Local Middle School, located to the side of the current K-12 facility.
Croxall said the board is now considering providing a new locker room for the football program, depending on available finances for the sports department. The current football locker room facilities are located near the entrance to the football field, the same building which houses the school’s wrestling team.
“We’re pursuing prices and all that stuff and plans, and it’s a little bit more major than anything we’ve done for awhile,” Croxall said. “We’d like to say that everything that we’ve tried to do with the sports money, we’ve tried to do it the best that we can do it without building Taj Mahals.”
Meanwhile, also related to sports, the board approved the spring sports schedule for this school year which included varsity and junior varsity baseball, softball and track and field.
The varsity baseball team is scheduled to start the season March 25 with a doubleheader at Toronto, followed by its home opener March 27 against Indian Creek. The regular season concludes May 2 at Columbiana.
Varsity softball, meanwhile, is scheduled to open its regular season March 27 at home against Indian Creek and finish the regular season May 5 at Columbiana.
The Beavers also are scheduled to host two track meets this season — April 11 and 18.
