County jobless rate declined in February

LISBON –Columbiana County’s unemployment declined in February after increasing significantly the month before.

The county’s jobless rate in February was 7.3 percent, down from 7.7 percent the month before and 5.9 percent in December, according to figures released Tuesday from the Ohio Department of Job and Family Services. Meanwhile, Ohio’s unemployment rate increased slightly to 5.1 percent, while the national rate declined 0.1 percent, to 4.7 percent.

The number of county residents receiving unemployment benefits declined from 4,045 to 3,400 in February, with the average benefit being $366 per week. The county has an estimated workforce of 47,200.

Among adjoining Ohio counties, the county’s jobless rate was the same as Mahoning, higher than Stark (6.3 percent) but lower than Carroll (7.6 percent) and Jefferson (8.9 percent).

The unemployment rate declined in 76 of Ohio’s 88 counties, increased in 11 and remained the same in one county. Mercer County again had the lowest jobless rate, at 3.7 percent, while Monroe County continued to hold the top spot at 11.8 percent.
