CCCTC to see more renovations

LISBON — More renovations are in the future at the Columbiana County Career and Technical Center.

At Tuesday’s meeting, Superintendent Chuck Adkins said he and the architects are looking at some possible projects, including replacing all the current lockers with larger ones for the students and expanding the size of English classrooms.

Adkins said the English classrooms were built to hold 12 students back when the building was first designed in the mid-1970s. Now some classes being housed there do have only 12, but others have 25, which is crowded.

Additionally, Adkins said he and Treasurer Catherine Mihalich were in a group which recently checked the building’s catwalks above some of the labs. They checked on the HVAC system in part of the building where those systems have not been already renovated and there are concerns about how many more years they can get from the system. Adkins said they do not want to see instructional time interrupted at some point do to a failing HVAC system, but it would probably be easier to replace the system above those labs and classrooms while they are being renovated if possible.

Adkins said he is meeting later this week with the engineers to look at that portion of the project and to start to get cost estimates for the projects they have in mind.

In presentations to the board, adult education coordinator Kelly Darney went over enrollment figures for the various programs and told the board at this point the adult program remains strong, about where it was enrollment-wise a year ago. She also gave the board statistics about the numbers of students receiving credentials through their programs.

Assistant Superintendent Jeremy Corbisello talked about how he is utilizing Instagram, Twitter and Facebook to continue generating excitement by posting news about what is happening in the high school programs.

In other matters:

— The board approved the disposal of a recording mixer and digital sound board, which is no longer functional and had been in the interactive media classroom.

— The board approved hiring Kara Heffner and Benjamin Ratner as adult education instructors. The two instructors will be teaching for the GED — one at East Palestine Middle School and another at the county jail. The board also added Elizabeth Quick and Michael Hill as substitute instructors and Mary Doty as a substitute custodian for the current school year. Hildy Deemer was added as an occasional seasonal building and grounds employee.

— The board accepted the donations of practice materials from Morgan Engineering to the welding and materials joining program.

— The next meeting of the board will be 7 p.m., March 21.
