Township applies for state grant to replace VFD brush truck

NEGLEY — Middleton Township  has applied for a state grant for a new brush truck for the Negley Volunteer Fire Department.

Township Fiscal Officer Bob Chapman said he filed the application for a $61,000 grant through the Ohio Development Services Agency.

If awarded, the Local Government Safety Capital Grant would cover the entire cost of a new truck, which would replace the fire department’s current brush truck that is about 25 years old, Chapman said.

The township would lease the truck to the fire department, since the department is privately owned, he explained.

The township contracts with the department for fire protection services each year.

Chapman said the township should know by mid-March if the grant is approved.

In other business, the board of trustees approved a motion to have the county engineer’s office conduct a survey of an alley in Negley that is located behind Gorby’s Grocery, to determine the width and exact location. Trustee Nancy Michaels has said a woman who lives by the alley has indicated she may request to have the alley vacated in the future, claiming she has been doing most of the upkeep of the alley for several years.
