Commissioner warns residents of email scam

LISBON — An email being sent to area residents contains a computer virus or malware, according to county Commissioner Tim Weigle.

At Wednesday’s Columbiana County Commissioners meeting, Weigle warned about an email from AGL online, which claims to be the recipient’s electric bill. Under the box which states the cost of the bill is another box warning the bill needs to be paid by the due date to avoid a $75 penalty. Then a blue box appears to be a link to manage your bill.

Clicking on that link downloads a virus onto the computer Weigle warned. County residents are urged not to open the email and definitely not to click on the manage your bill link.

“The best thing is to not open it,” Weigle said.

Weigle said he has researched the AGL and found there is an actual Australia power company utilizing those initials. That company seems to be aware of the scam and has a link on its website where it is also telling people about to do if they have received the hoax or scam email bill.

In other matters on Wednesday, the board approved receipt of the 2016 DTAC (delinquent tax and assessment collection) reports from both the prosecutor’s office and the treasurer’s office, as well as the report from the East Liverpool Municipal Court for November 2016.

The board also voted to establish a new fund for the Waste Water Treatment Plant grant for Salineville.
