Demolition crew discovers grenade

WELLSVILLE – The discovery of a non-explosive piece of ammunition Friday led to a visit from Youngstown’s Bomb Squad units to the village.

According to Wellsville police, fire crews requested assistance from the Bomb Squad Friday morning following a report of a grenade discovered in the basement of a home in the area of Boyce and 10th streets. Demolition crews were reportedly in the process of tearing down the structure when the grenade was found.

Police said, based on determination from investigators with the Bomb Squad, that the grenade was real, but turned out to be a “dud” and did not detonate.

Officials with the Wellsville Fire Department did not return calls Friday.
