Additional funding to help expand health care clinics

LISBON-An additional $222,278 in federal funding received by the Community Action Agency will be used to expanded services at its health care clinics. The award was among $8.4 million available through the Affordable Care Act that was awarded to 40 public medical centers in northeast Ohio. The announcement was made two weeks ago by U.S. Sen. Sherrod Brown, D-Ohio. The CAA’s Mary Ann Pettibon said the money will be used to hire and OB/GYN physician to serve their female clients and to open a dental clinic at its Salineville office. The other CAA health clinics are in East Liverpool and in Lisbon.

Judge Carol Robb awarded funding

LISBON – Columbiana County Municipal Court Judge Carol Ann Robb, was awarded program funding through the Specialized Docket Payroll Subsidy Project, a subsidy of the Mental Health and Addiction Services of Ohio.

Judge Robb’s court will receive $12,331 total to advance her mental health docket through the summer of 2015. Judge Robb sought the funding to aid her acclaimed S.T.A.R. (Successful Treatment And Recovery) program, which aids in the treatment of defendants who have substance abuse or mental health disorders. Because of the success of this model, Judge Robb’s S.T.A.R. program is now being used in courtrooms across Ohio.

“I’m pleased that our work to help those facing mental illness or who are addicted to drugs or alcohol is being recognized and supported yet again,” Judge Robb said. “In court, we can often help to prevent people from becoming repeat offenders simply by addressing this very common problem.”

Judge Robb has initiated several successful programs for defendants related to mental health and recidivism. She has served on the Specialty Docket Commission, as well as the Ohio Judicial College. Robb is currently running for election to the 7th District Court of Appeals.

Parking restrictions

EAST LIVERPOOL Parking will be restricted downtown Monday through Friday of next week as paving recommences on Fifth and Sixth streets.

Signs have been posted to direct drivers away from restricted areas.

Town hall meeting

NEWELL- Hancock County Sheriff Ralph Fletcher will attend a town hall meeting for all residents of Newell 7 p.m. Tuesday at the Newell Lions Den. This meeting is to enable residents to address any concerns or to present questions for the sheriff. The meeting is sponsored by the Newell Community Improvement Coalition.

LISBON – The Wayne Township Trustees will meet at 6:30 p.m. Thursday.

Port Authority to meet

EAST LIVERPOOL The Columbiana County Port Authority will hold a special board meeting at 8 a.m. Wednesday at the main office on St. George Street.

The purpose of the meeting will be for the Approval of Acceptance of a $49,500 Local Government Infrastructure State Grant for a Wireless Broadband Study, Hiring of IceMiller Whiteboard to undertake the Broadband Wireless Study and Approval of Sale of a 3,800 square foot concrete block building in East Liverpool to Christopher R. Cowan. No other action will be taken.

Hospital program discontinued

EAST LIVERPOOL – The Senior Class program at East Liverpool City Hospital will be discontinued due to a retirement and dwindling participation, according to a hospital spokesman.

The hospital will no longer pay the subscription membership on any ambulance service.

ODOHNoMore meeting to be held

EAST LIVERPOOL “Listen to Addiction” is the theme of this week’s meeting of ODOHNoMore, a newly-formed anti-drug group which will meet from 7-8 p.m. Thursday at the Salvation Army on West Fourth Street.

Several area residents who have dealt with addiction will talk about those experiences during the meeting, which will conclude with an exercise with yoga instructor Amy McCormack.

Anyone who has lost someone to addiction is welcome to take a picture to post in memorial.

The public is encouraged to attend the weekly meetings and to get involved with the group’s projects aimed at ending the drug problem in the city and surrounding area.

Pet parade scheduled

EAST LIVERPOOL – A pet parade will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday in conjunction with the annual Oktoberfest at Thompson Park, sponsored by the Humane Society of Columbiana County.

The parade will take place near the park entrance with prizes awarded for best trick, best kisser, most unique, most in need of a makeover, pet look-a-like and Oktober special.

The Humane Society will also be selling its T-shirts and pet items.

The Oktoberfest, featuring activities for adults and children, including entertainment and a variety of beers and wines, is scheduled from noon until 8 p.m. that day.

Road closed

Fire hydrant flushing planned

WELLSVILLE – The flushing of fire hydrants in the village will begin Wednesday morning.

According to a press release from the Buckeye Water District, the process first will start along Hibbits Mill Road and continue along Route 45 to Wells Avenue. From there, the flushing will continue throughout the village of Wellsville from the north end of Wells to the south end of Clark Avenue.

The flushing will continue daily until the process has been completed.

The BWD states customers may experience temporary discoloration of water and low water pressure during the activity.

WELLSVILLE – Yellow Creek Township Trustees will meet 6 p.m. today at the township building, Oak Ridge Road.

Regional representative of Secretary of State visits county

COLUMBIANA – A regional representative of Secretary of State Jon Husted will be in Columbiana County 2-4 p.m. Sept. 11 at the Columbiana Public Library, North Middle Street.

The local event is of 28 such meetings scheduled throughout the state this month where regional office hours will be held and liaisons for the Secretary of State’s office available to meet with the public.

The purpose of open office hours, according to a release, is to give local residents an opportunity to learn more about, and stay connected with, the Secretary of State’s office in an informal and accessible setting.

In addition to making voter registration forms and election information available, regional representatives will be on hand to answer questions and distribute materials to those interested in learning more about the other functions of the office such as the business services division and initiatives including the Ohio Business Profile and Military Ready-to-Vote program.

Barborak to hold town hall meeting

LISBON – State Rep. Nick Barborak (D-Lisbon) will hold a town hall meeting on the heroin crisis in Columbiana County at 9:30 a.m. Saturday at the Columbiana County Career and Technical Center.

Area residents are asked to share their concerns and ideas, and Barborak will address measures he is taking in Columbus to address the heroin crisis on a statewide level.

Local community leaders and health and law enforcement officials also will provide information and address ways communities can fight heroin abuse.

Governmental ethics workshop

NEW CUMBERLAND-The city of New Cumberland will host a workshop on governmental ethics at noon Monday.

The workshop will be given by the West Virginia Ethics Commission and will be held at the New Cumberland Municipal Building. It is free and open to local and state public employees, government lawyers and the general public.

The topics covered from the West Virginia Governmental Ethics Act will include the prohibition against use of public office for private gain (including nepotism), the prohibition against having a financial interest in a public contract, gift limitations for public employees, and the prohibition against improperly using or divulging confidential information.
