Personnel matters dominate board meeting

EAST LIVERPOOL – A multitude of personnel matters dominated a brief city school board meeting Monday night, including the resignation of a teacher who had just been hired two weeks ago.

The board approved 3-0, with members Brian Allen and Bob Estell absent, the resignation of newly hired Spanish teacher Eric Teutsch, effective that day.

It was explained that Teutsch has accepted a position in another school district, with no other details given.

Estell entered the meeting later.

Joe Rawson of Stratton was re-appointed as truancy officer/court liaison for the 2014-2015 school year at a $25,000 salary, plus benefits.

During her good news report, Superintendent Melissa Watson noted that food service Director Margie Wright has arranged to have breakfast available for all students in the district at no cost this coming school year.

Watson said, “If you offer it, they’ll eat it,” even students who normally don’t eat breakfast.

She also reported that plans are being finalized for the back-to-school bash, with letters containing details to be sent to parents this week.

Numerous substitute positions were also filled, including teachers, teachers’ aides, custodians, crossing guards, bus drivers, bus aides, a bus mechanic, a guidance counselor and secretaries.

The board approved a contract with West Point Paving Inc. for sealing and re-striping the parking lots and roads at LaCroft and North elementary buildings and the high school. The contract amount was not immediately available at the meeting.

At the recommendation of Treasurer Todd Puster, the board approved entrusting employees Greg Adkins, ticket manager; M. Quinn Carter, junior high athletics; Kenna Rayl, treasurer’s office; and Marjorie Wright, food service, with varying amounts of change.

Board member Larry Walton provided fellow members with a legislative update on Common Core, urging them to review the issue and saying, “I wish legislators would stick to legislation and let us stick to educating.”

The board convened in executive session to discuss contract negotiations and an employee hiring, with no action expected afterward.
