New superintendent meets with community members

EAST LIVERPOOL – New city schools Superintendent Melissa Watson said she is “very encouraged and hopeful” after about a month on the job and having recently met a contingent from the community.

She reported during this week’s school board meeting about an organizational meeting by a group that plans to start out the school year with a bang and then work with the district in its efforts to improve.

The newly formed group, composed of local church leaders and child/family organizations, met with school board members and discussed outreach and support for the success of the district’s children and families.

Watson said between 25 and 30 representatives attended, saying they were “open and willing to come in and help with our academic endeavors” as well as help plan a back-to-school bash set for 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Aug. 22 at Thompson Park.

The evening also served as a chance for these community members to meet Watson, who began her duties in the school district July 1.

Another meeting is scheduled at 5 p.m. Aug. 7 at Casa de Emmanuel on Mulberry Street, and anyone interested in helping improve the school district was invited to attend by Watson.

In addition, any individual or group interested in providing supplies or services for the back-to-school bash can also attend the meeting.
