Buckeye Water District board approves district job opening

WELLSVILLE -The Buckeye Water District will begin advertising for a job opening with the district following a special board of trustees meeting Monday morning at the district office on Clark Avenue in Wellsville.

The position is for what BWD calls a distribution crew worker, classified as Distribution 1, who would work throughout the district repairing and maintaining water lines, valves and related areas of the water distribution infrastructure.

Starting salary will be $12 per hour, with total compensation depending upon the health insurance status of the applicant (single, married or married with children). The hire will become a fully-fledged employee after completing a 90-day introductory period.

A full list of necessary skills and experience wasn’t available Monday morning, but personnel committee Chairman Tim O’Hara said possession of a CDL is required. Applicants will also need to complete a drug test.

During a brief finance committee meeting that preceded the full council meeting, board Chairman Mike Ryan stated his case with an eye toward the future, saying that three of the district’s six distribution workers are approaching 20 years of employment. Multiple promotions from the field to the office had also left distribution openings that were never filled.

“We are a little thin there,” Ryan said.

Ryan presented the recommendation of the personnel committee, which had met last Friday and concluded that reinforcements were needed in the department. After discussions of compensation and skill set concluded, finance Chairman Gene McGaffick gave his committee’s recommendation for the opening as well.

The full board meeting followed, where the resolution for listing the position was approved unanimously by a roll-call vote.
