Bacteria halts production at Schwebels plant

YOUNGSTOWN – The Schwebel Baking Co., on Tuesday halted production at its Midlothian Boulevard plant.

According to WKBN Channel 27, the action came after listeria bacteria was discovered on the premises during a scheduled environmental assessment.

In a press release, the company said that as a precautionary measure it is voluntarily withdrawing any potentially affected products.

Exactly which products may be affected were not listed in the release, but a check of the two grocery stores in Lisbon, Sparkle and Save-A-Lot, showed that all white bread had been removed from the shelves.

There was still wheat bread available.

To check if a loaf of bread is possible affected, Channel 27 reported, people can check the “Best Used By” section of the bag. If it begins with an A, the television station said, people can return the bread and get a refund.

According to the Center for Disease Control and Prevention, listeria is a bacteria which can cause serious infection and especially affects the elderly, newborns, pregnant women and those with weakened immune systems.

Among the symptoms are fever and muscle aches, sometimes preceded by diarrhea or other gastrointestinal symptoms.

Channel 27 spoke to Vince Bevacqua, a Schwebel spokesman, who said only certain strains of listeria can cause serious infections, and officials are not sure what type of strain was present at the bakery.

No other Schwebel bakeries are impacted by this suspension.
