Fire marshal seeks information
WELLSVILLE – Fire swept through the upper floors of a vacant house at 408 14th St. in Wellsville early Tuesday morning. The blaze is thought to have started at the rear of the structure.
The 3:26 a.m. call was answered by 10 Wellsville firefighters, who were soon joined by 12 additional firefighters from the Highlandtown Volunteer Fire Department, with Irondale fire personnel on standby at Wellsville Station No. 6. All units cleared by 12:30 p.m.
The structure, which is said to have been empty for more than a year, was insured by its owner, Brett Pharr of Charlotte, N.C. The house was listed for sale, with a sign in front until Tuesday afternoon. There was no utility service to the home, though AEP Ohio was called to shut off power to a meter box.
The cause of the blaze remains under investigation by the state fire marshal’s office, though a sign posted on the remains of the structure says arson is suspected. Residents with information about who may be responsible for the fire are asked to call the fire marshal’s office at 800-589-2728, with a cash reward being offered.
