Suspicious fire claims pavilion at park

SALINEVILLE-A fire village fire department officials are calling “suspicious” destroyed the McCollough Courts Memorial Pavilion in Kiwanis Park in the early morning hours Saturday.

Salineville Fire Chief Jeff Lewis said his department responded to Kiwanis Park shortly after midnight to find the pavilion fully involved.

The Franklin Township volunteer fire department was placed on standby but was not called to the scene. The village department used water hoses to extinguish the fire, but the pavilion was beyond saving.

Lewis said park benches and other items stored underneath the pavilion were also destroyed in the blaze. He called the pavilion and its contents a total loss.

Salineville Kiwanis does carry insurance on the pavilion according to Lewis.

Lewis said the department currently has no leads regarding who might be responsible for the suspicious blaze. He noted that he plans to review the surveillance footage from a nearby business for clues as to who might be responsible for the fire.
