Personnel issues handled at BOE meeting
EAST LIVERPOOL – Numerous personnel issues were unanimously approved by the city school board Monday night, although one member opposed a step up on the salary scale for a vocational teacher.
The salary adjustment of cosmetology instructor Michele Davis from the A-5 step to A-9, meaning an annual salary of $50,311.98 was approved, but not with the support of board member Brian Allen.
The agenda noted Davis begun teaching the class this year and has provided documentation of years of experience, resulting in the salary increase, but Allen explained his opposition after the meeting, saying, “I don’t think someone’s professional experience should count toward teaching experience.”
Resignations approved included that of Pamela Gerace, Job Training Program coordinator, effective June 30, for the purpose of retirement after 30 years with the district. Her resignation was accepted with regrets.
The resignation of teacher Vicky Pearson for retirement purposes after 24 years of service was also approved, as was the resignation of band director Jack Skidmore, who has been employed in the district two years.
The board also clarified that resignations accepted at its last meeting from Karen Kavulick and Linda Allen were for retirement purposes.
The non-certified extra-curricular appointment of Brandon Lucas as assistant junior high boys track coach was also approved.
Also approved was a list of 32 summer workers, with hours based on the district’s needs. Bargaining unit members will earn $12.77 per hour and non-bargaining unit members, $10.02 per hour.
The board agreed to a contract with Youngstown State University for the literacy and math after school program for the current school year, with board member Larry Walton saying an average of 50 students take advantage of the program each year.
Superintendent James Herring reported in his good news report that summer school classes have been changed from LaCroft to North Elementary due to a large response, with about 100 students between grades kindergarten and fourth registered already registered.
Treasurer Todd Puster read a request from an administrator for the board to consider another $3,000 to $5,000 annually for art supplies, and he said district officials are “challenged” by channeling finances in the right direction each year.
He said the request “merits some thought” as the district begins budget discussions.
Puster also addressed county Treasurer Linda Bolon’s actions regarding collection of delinquent taxes, saying delinquencies are “very significant” in the district and her efforts are “very much appreciated and helpful.”
Puster told the board that city Councilman Sherrie Curtis also came and spoke with him in regard to the county’s recent discussions on landbanking, which he said “has worked in tough situations and we have some tough situations here,” that could be helped by the process.
An Enrollment Dispute Resolution was approved that outlines the procedure to be followed regarding enrollment of homeless students, as required by the state Department of Education.
Puster said after the meeting that, at this time, the district has no homeless students.
