Single-vehicle crash closes highway
EAST LIVERPOOL – A single-vehicle crash blocked the west-bound lanes of state Route 30 in Liverpool Township between East Liverpool and Calcutta late Sunday morning.
According to the Ohio State Highway Patrol, the driver, identified as Ryan J. Morgan, 24, of East Liverpool, was driving a 2004 Pontiac Grand Am and lost control while negotiating a bend in the road. The vehicle went off the right side of the pavement into the roadside culvert and trees, overturning numerous times.
First-responders, including personnel from the La Croft and Dixonville stations of the Liverpool Township Fire Department, and the Glenmoor and Calcutta volunteer fire departments, were called to the scene at 10:16 a.m. Also responding were units from Liverpool Township Police, East Liverpool Police, St. Clair Township Police and the state highway patrol.
Though Lifeteam EMS and Tri-County Ambulance sent units to the crash site, Morgan’s injuries were deemed serious enough for him to be flown directly to UPMC Hospital in Pittsburgh. The west-bound lanes of state Route 30 had to be closed to traffic temporarily as a landing site for a helicopter from STAT MedEvac.
Morgan was the only occupant of the vehicle at the time of the crash. His condition was unknown at press time, though a source at the highway patrol stated that Morgan, “should be OK.”
A cause of the accident has not been determined at this time.
