Officers search home following suspected abuse

DIXONVILLE – Liverpool Township Police executed a search warrant at 2080 Bluff Street Tuesday afternoon in connection with a report of suspected child abuse or neglect.

Chief Jayson Jackson said the search warrant was obtained through East Liverpool Municipal Court after his department was notified at 9 p.m. Monday about an incident involving an infant that allegedly occurred earlier in the day.

The child was taken to Akron Children’s Hospital in Akron and was reportedly doing OK, according to Jackson, who said no one was charged or in custody as of Tuesday afternoon.

The home was being searched for signs of abuse and neglect, according to Jackson, who said, “We will take any unsafe objects out of the house and make it safe.” He did not specify what those objects might be, but Sergeant Kevin Hughes was seen bringing a small bag of apparent evidence from the house.

While searching the home, officers found two dogs inside a small kennel that Jackson described as “too small for two dogs,” also saying they were in deplorable condition, with no food and water available to them.

The dog warden’s office was called and deputy dog warden Jessica Gordon, assisted by Patrolman Lacey Barker, removed the two canines from the home.

Jackson said no one was supposed to be living in the house but said his department has received anonymous complaints of a “lot of traffic” to and from the property.

Children’s Services and Akron Children’s Hospital are handling the investigation of the alleged child abuse, and Jackson said city law Director Tim McNicol, Children’s Services and a concerned neighbor were instrumental in him being able to obtain the search warrant.
