Commissioners elect president

LISBON – Columbiana County commissioners will have someone new running the meetings this year.

The board elected Commissioner Jim Hoppel as president to preside over its meetings in 2014, taking over for Mike Halleck, who did the job the past two years. Commissioner Tim Weigle was named vice president.

The action came at Monday’s annual reorganizational meeting, which the law requires be held the second Monday in January. Commissioners then voted to retain clerk Scherry DeSarro and deputy clerks Callie Sowards and Carla Channell. The latter two hold part-time positions.

Commissioners also agreed to keep with the same regular meeting schedule of 9 a.m. every Wednesday, starting next week, and reauthorized Halleck to continue to negotiate and sign on behalf of the board any oil and gas-related issues.

Commissioners then proceeded into regular session to hold its weekly meeting instead of holding one two days later. They took care of routine business, which included hiring two new employees: Lyndsey Ward as a part-time courthouse security officer and Jennifer Hoffman of Lisbon as a child support case manager in the Child Support Enforcement Agency, which is an office of the county Department of Job and Family Services.

Both hirings are to fill vacancies and do not represent new positions.
