Board accepts resignation of girls coach

LISBON – The Beaver Local Board of Education has formally accepted a letter of resignation from Michael Spinella as head coach of the girls basketball team at Beaver Local High School.

Board members unanimously approved the resignation, which was submitted on Dec. 19 by Spinella, who only coached the girls squad in the first six games of this season.

According to Superintendent Kent Polen, the letter stated that Spinella was leaving his coaching position in order to dedicate more time to his teaching duties at the school.

“That’s all his resignation said,” Polen added.

Spinella has been a teacher for five years at Beaver Local High School, where he remains as the math and science teacher for inclusion students with learning disabilities and other cognitive challenges. The board unanimously approved him to serve as head girls basketball coach at its May 13 meeting last year.

BLHS principal Tom Cunningham says his knowledge of the situation is limited to Spinella’s resignation letter, which was forwarded to him by Polen.

“Contractually, it’s none of my business, so I wasn’t going to pry,” Cunningham said.

Beaver Local athletic director Eric Lowe said he had no further information regarding Spinella’s abrupt departure.

“I believe that he submitted a letter and the board approved it, and that’s all I know,” Lowe said.

The board voted to enter executive session at the end of the meeting for personnel matters, including the “consideration of the letting of personnel contracts, for the appointment, employment, dismissal, or compensation of an employee or official,” with no action taken afterward.
