LISBON — The Coordinated Action for School Health (CASH) Coalition awarded School Health Grants to six local schools Oct. 11 at the Columbiana County Educational Service Center in Lisbon.

The grants range in funding from $1,000 to $2,000 and will help schools implement student wellness activities with projects that target one or more health priority areas (obesity prevention, substance abuse/mental health supports, and tobacco use/cancer prevention).

The 2018-19 grant award winners are Crestview Local Elementary School, Garfield Elementary School in Wellsville, East Liverpool City Schools, Joshua Dixon Elementary in Columbiana, Reilly Elementary in Salem, and the Columbiana County Career and Technical Center.

The funded projects will support multiple wellness initiatives, including an after-school physical fitness program at Reilly Elementary; a 2nd grade field day promoting physical activity at Joshua Dixon; a 1st grade Yoga program at Joshua Dixon; a program engaging community speakers along with a bike rodeo at Wellsville; an evidence- based program to increase self-esteem in 5th grade girls at Crestview; a drug- free incentive program for students at the Career and Technical Center; and a program to encourage healthy food choices at East Liverpool High School.

The grants have benefited Columbiana County schools for 11 years and have reached more than 15,000 students. To date, 112 grants have been awarded to improve student health.

Funding for the grants is provided by the Columbiana County Health Department, the Columbiana County Mental Health & Recovery Services Board, East Liverpool City Hospital, Salem Regional Medical Center, the Wilson Foundation, and Family Children First Counsel.
