Chili cook-off set for Saturday
WEIRTON, W.Va. — “The Heat Is On 4th annual Red Hot in Hancock Chili Cook-off” is noon to 5 p.m. Saturday at the Weirton Event Center.
Cooks judged on flavor of meat and sauce in the red and verde chili as long as it doesn’t contain beans. Homestyle category can include beans, pasta, corn or rice.
This will be the last year for cooks to make competition salsa. The International Chili Society (ICS), who sanctions the event, has decided to replace the salsa competition with vegetarian chili in the future.
“Cook and compete, or just come to eat,” organizers say.
Cooks are required to prepare two quarts for judging and two gallons of chili for tasting samples. Cooks are also judged on showmanship including decorating their area and engaging the public during the chili tasting. Awards include People’s and Sponsor’s Choice and a prize package of $1,400. Chili cooks must be members of the ICS showing current proof of membership or joining or renewing by the start of the event. Chili tasting tickets available, two for $1.
Entertainment at the event will include performances from Brett Cain, Jaymz Keller from Acoustic Descendsion, Mark the Magician, The Allegheny Angels, Casey Sisters, The Place for Dance, and the Little Genies. Chinese auction planned. Vendors on site.
