Mountaineer Futures Scholarship program

CHESTER — The Mountaineer Futures Scholarship program is open to Hancock County seniors from the Oak Glen, Weir and Weirton Madonna high schools. One senior from each of these schools is chosen each year. Since 2008, Mountaineer has awarded $102,000 through the program to help these area seniors realize their dream of going to college. Each recipient receives a check for $1,000 for each of their four years in college that they can then use to cover the cost of tuition and books.

Recipients include:

* Olivia Murray, a 2015 graduate of Oak Glen who is currently attending Marshall University, majoring in Nursing. She has received the Mountaineer Scholarship the past three years and 2018 will be her final year.

* Emily Elias, a 2015 graduate of Weirton Madonna who is currently attending West Virginia University, majoring in Pharmacy. She has received the Mountaineer Scholarship the past three years and 2018 will be her final year.

* Bryan Phillips, a 2015 graduate of Weir who currently attending West Virginia University, majoring in Biology and Pre-Med. He has received the Mountaineer Scholarship the past three years and 2018 will be his final year.

* Irene Salopek, a 2016 graduate of Weir who is currently attending West Virginia State University, majoring in Tourism Management/Hospitality. This will be her third year of receiving the Mountaineer Scholarship.

* Gabriella Anile, a 2016 graduate of Weirton Madonna who is currently attending West Virginia State University, majoring in the Fashion Industry. This will be her third year of receiving the Mountaineer Scholarship.

* Jayson Chappell, a 2017 graduate of Oak Glen High School who is attending Community College of Beaver County, majoring in Professional Pilot and Drone Pilot Programs. He has also enrolled in Southern Illinois University to begin a Bachelor of Science degree. This is his second year receiving the Mountaineer Scholarship.

* Rebecca Garan, a 2017 graduate of Weirton Madonna who is attending West Virginia State University, majoring in Biochemistry. This is her second year receiving the Mountaineer Scholarship.

* Abby Wallace, a 2017 graduate of Weir who is attending George Washington University, majoring in Law. This is her second year receiving the Mountaineer Scholarship.

* Ty Biela, a 2018 graduate of Oak Glen who will attend West Virginia State University, majoring in Biometrics Systems and Computer Engineering. This is his first year receiving the Mountaineer Scholarship.

* Caroline Fodor, a 2018 graduate of Weir who will attend Wheeling Jesuit University, majoring in Biology. This is her first year receiving the Mountaineer Scholarship.

* Joseph Garan, a 2018 graduate of Weirton Madonna who will be attending West Virginia State University, majoring in Pharmacy. This is his first year receiving the Mountaineer Scholarship.
