Hancock County Community Educational Outreach Service

NEW CUMBERLAND — Hancock County Community Educational Outreach Service meets 11 a.m. Sept. 6 at the Hancock County Senior Center for a light lunch followed by its regular business meeting and monthly lesson.

This month, the lesson is “Home Economics from the Great Depression to Today,” and will be presented by Louanne Huff. This lesson examines the ways science and technology have shaped United States food culture, and the role home economists played in helping families in challenging economic times.

In other business the club will be taking up donations to purchase supplies for the Senior Center kitchen. Also, officers will be elected.

The public is welcome to join for the lesson and meeting. If you would like to attend the lunch, the cost of $5 applies.

Pumpkin Festival planned in Wellsville

WELLSVILLE — The Wellsville Area Chamber of Commerce’s inaugural Pumpkin Festival is scheduled 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. Oct. 6 in downtown Wellsville.

Several vendors, games and contests are planned throughout the day, while musical group “Pure Gold Band” will be among the performers.

LaDawn Whitman, assistant chamber treasurer, announced during last week’s chamber luncheon that several sponsors for the one-day festival have been secured, but more are being accepted.

The chamber also recognized Roberts Funeral Home, Main Street, as August Business of the Month. A presentation of the plaque was held at the funeral home following the luncheon.

Ed Bauer, vice president of the Wellsville Board of Education, was featured speaker during the luncheon, discussing the district’s relationship with South Field Energy; building improvements at both Daw and Garfield elementary buildings; the free school supplies and free breakfast/lunch programs; and the success of the district’s annual “Back to School Bash.”

Wednesday’s luncheon was the first of the new fiscal year following its traditional two-month break for the summer. Normally held the fourth Thursday of the month, the August luncheon was moved to Wednesday as the Paddle Wheel is closed for business on Thursdays.

The next chamber luncheon is noon Sept. 27 at Casa de Emanuel in East Liverpool.
