Garden Club celebrates 73 years

Succulent Bistro Set designed by Lisa Chronister (Submitted photo)

EAST LIVERPOOL — Twenty-two Garden Club members were warmly greeted by the President, Chris Bell on April 21, at The East Liverpool Country Club for their Anniversary luncheon. The president shared an opening prayer by Julie Howard Mitchell about gratitude for each other, the goodness of the earth, and that we are all co-workers with God in keeping our community gardens beautiful.

The president thanked all the members for their commitment to the club, thus serving the community. She also gave praise for the pioneers of the club in 1944, such as Roxie McElroy, Mrs. Leo Lawrence and Margy Jacob, to name a few. She talked about the longevity of the club and members such as Ann Hanka, Linda Petras, Gini Jackson, Jean Chinander, Ruth Hood, and Doris Musselman, to name a few. These, as well as all the other dedicated members have and continue to make the club as successful as it is today. Currently there are 32 active members and 11 associate members. The club is a proud affiliate of The National Garden Club, Garden Clubs of Ohio, Youngstown District and The Garden Forum of Greater Youngstown Area. Anyone interested in working to beautify the community and becoming a member of the Garden Club may contact Lisa Chronister at 330-383-0473.

The club’s members enjoyed a beautiful luncheon prepared by a culinary chef, then were treated to a mystery game that was led by Chronister and Musselman, Program Chairs. The game proved to be challenging and fun for the members as they had to work in pairs to solve a mystery that involved plants.

Members were then treated to a beautiful presentation of succulents and how they could create original designs to be used inside or outside using objects that they had around the house. Chronister showed how something as simple as an old shoe or purse could be turned into a piece of beauty using mosses and succulents. The most spectacular piece was a Bistro set planted with mosses, succulents and fern. Both she and Musselman are the featured presenters at The United Way’s Luncheon, “United We Garden,” on May, at The East Liverpool Country Club.

Another community activity that the club was involved in was The Lady Slippers Art Show at The Country Club on April 22. Hanka and Petras created two beautiful floral designs for “The Lady Slippers” to display.

After all the festivities of the day, the President reminded all about the upcoming annual Plant Sale to be held from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. May 13 at St. Stephen’s Episcopal Church on Fourth Street and thanked all for a beautiful day.
