SALINEVILLE — Southern Local High School FFA members showcased their public speaking skills after participating in several recent competitions.

Freshmen Dalton Frischkorn and Harmony Black each placed third Feb. 15 during the FFA District III event, where Frischkorn recited the FFA creed and Black took part in the Beginning Prepared Speaking contest. School FFA Advisor Shelley Pirogowicz said they competed against five other schools at Norwayne High School in Creston.

The Southern freshmen also appeared at Norwayne one week prior on Feb. 8, where they received first place in the same categories during the FFA’s sub-district competition. The team faced three other schools and fellow FFA member Luke Frischkorn, a senior at SLHS, placed third for extemporaneous speaking.

“The students did a great job and I am very proud of their performance,” Pirogowicz said.

Next for the FFA chapter are the Southeast Judging Contest on March 10 at Zanesville; the FFA State Officer Chapter Visit on March 21; the state judging contest on March 25; an FFA Dodgeball tournament on March 31 at SLHS; the petting zoo at Southern Local Elementary on April 12; the chapter banquet on April 27; and the Ohio FFA Convention on May 4-5 in Columbus, where students will receive state awards.
